Unpacking the CVS Source Distribution

Unpacking the CVS Source Distribution

This page describes tools for unpacking the CVS source distribution. The source distribution is tarred and gzipped (also known as .tar.gz or .tgz format). Usually you first uncompress it with the gzip/gunzip program, and then unpack it with tar. Some tools may be able to do both operations in a single step.

Unix
Unix systems should come with a suitable version of tar. Some may come with gzip, but if you need gzip, you can get it from the GNU FTP sites.
VMS
Versions of tar and gunzip for VMS are at ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/VMS/. For VAX, you want gunzip-vax.exe and vmstar-vax.exe. For Alpha, you want gunzip-axp.exe and vmstar-axp.exe.
Windows
There are free command line versions of tar and gzip at ftp://microlib.cc.utexas.edu/microlib/nt/gnu/. The well-known WinZip shareware program also can unpack .tar.gz files.
