CVS "Halibut" release
The next CVS release has been code-named Halibut, and has been released as CVS 1.10.
Thanks to everyone who helped us beta test Halibut.
How does Halibut differ from CVS 1.9?
A few of the differences are:
- Easier installation. CVS no longer requires external diff, patch, or RCS programs.
- A number of CVS operations are faster.
- All of the most commonly reported bugs in CVS 1.9 are fixed, as well as many less known bugs.
- Security fixes and features.
- Miscellaneous new features - see the NEWS file in the CVS source distribution for details.
Why is it called "Halibut"?
Here is how Noel, our release-meister, tells the story:
You may have noticed that we've got a code name for this upcoming version of CVS. It was at Usenix this year, where I was working at the Cyclic booth, that I realized that this might be a good idea. At the time, I think I'd been staring down at the RedHat booth, just across the way and about 30 feet to the left. I thought, "Well, this release name business works for the RedHat guys, why not for us?" I then turned around and looked at the Cyclic Software banner hung in our booth and noticed the Pascal Molli fish logo. It wasn't long before I put two and two togther.
By the time Erik Troan (of RedHat) arrived at the booth, I had narrowed things down to "Anchovy" or "Halibut." You can blame Erik for the choice of the latter. :-)
